Mother's Day is Over…Now What?

Do you really feel appreciated as a mother?  Mother’s Day is a holiday where your family sort of has to appreciate you for the most part, right?  What about every other day of the year?  Do you know what my son recently asked me?  “Mom, how come they don’t have a holiday called Kid’s Day”?  I started laughing and said, “You’re kidding right?  Um…because every day is Kid’s Day buddy”!  Why should moms only get one day when the world appreciates them?  I think Mother’s Day should be a monthly celebration…actually make that a daily celebration!!!
Mother’s Day will come around again in another 365 days.  Why do we have to wait that long to feel respected, loved, appreciated and noticed?  Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a wonderful holiday and I am more than happy to participate and receive all the perks.  Do holidays such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Teacher Appreciation Day, etc. teach us that it’s okay to have a lack of appreciation every other day?  I wish every day was appreciation day in my house and believe me, I try, but it somehow usually fails.  I guess moms could settle for “Thank You Day”.  You kicked butt as a mom today, you deserve a thank you.  You packed the greatest lunchbox today, you deserve a thank you.  You made sure your child had his favorite socks washed and ready to wear today, you deserve a thank you.  You could have made reservations but instead decided to slave over a home cooked gourmet meal, you deserve a thank you.  Sounds nice, doesn’t it?  A simple thank you goes a long way.
I certainly didn’t choose to become a mother because I wanted or expected a “thank you” every day.  To me, there are many forms a “thank you” can take.  A hug from my seven year old is a thank you.  A random “I wuv you” from my two year old is a thank you.  When my five year old asks me if I am wearing a new dress and tells me I look pretty, that is a thank you.  When my husband plays with my kids so I can have a moment of silence, that is a thank you.
We don’t need a day to feel appreciated.  We need, want and deserve to feel valued EVERY day.  Whether it’s coming from our kids, our spouse or even a stranger, knowing we are cherished, respected and rewarded with a few “thank yous” here and there, (whatever the definition means to you), can make our day and journey through motherhood a whole lot easier and more gratifying!

Hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day and continue to feel the love, the warmth and appreciation from your family…EVERY day!
